Bowling is a sport
Bowling is a sport that can be approached in different ways and still have the same outcome. How do you approach your game, hook or no hook?
The object is to obviously knock down as many pins as you can and get the highest score. Throwing strikes is the easiest and fastest way to increase your score. How to achieve a strike is somewhat a mystery to some people. Most beginner bowlers just try to roll the ball straight down the lane. That is good for knocking over the pins in its path, but ultimately the ball really needs an angle and hit the pocket properly to achieve a strike. When watching the Pro Bowlers you will notice that some have a very large hook in their ball going down the lane. They are trying to achieve a perfect angle to ensure a strike. The bowling ball does not need a large hook going down the lane but should hook some to create the proper angle of entry. The pocket for a right handed bowler would be the 1 and 3 pins. The one pin, also known as head pin is the first one closest to you in the triangle shape created by all 10 pins. The 3 pin would be the pin beside that to the right. The pocket for a left handed bowler would be the 1 and 2 pins. The 2 pin is the pin on the left side of the head pin.
It has been proven that your best percentage to strike is when the ball is entering the pocket at a 3 – 6 degree angle. The following video will show you a study and how they came up with this. There are many other factors in pin carry. Watch in coming weeks for other blogs with info and ways to build a better bowler.
